Kalinda School's sensory spaces are designed to calm or stimulate students. Everyone is different, so a space can either reduce sensory overload or stimulate the senses. Heavy work is any type of activity that pushes or pulls against the body. These activities can help students feel centered. Heavy work engages a sense called proprioception, or body awareness. This can help more children and students, not just those with specific sensory needs.
Clontarf helps young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men to attend school, finish Year 12 and enter employment. Using supportive relationships, a welcoming environment and a diverse range of activities, the young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men develop improved self-esteem and confidence which assists them to participate in education, employment and society in a positive way. Kalinda School Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students join with Murrumbidge Regional High School each week for Clontarf.
Some students attend weekly RDA programs conducted under excellent supervision at the RDA facility at Dalton Park.
The school Assembly is held each fortnight. All members of the school community are involved and parents, caregivers, guardians and friends are always welcome. The promotion of self-esteem and the recognition of achievement through the presentation of awards is a major focus of our weekly assembly.
The annual Awards Presentation Day is held at the school at the end of each year. The formal presentation of awards recognises student's achievement, citizenship and sportsmanship.
Computer technology is an important area of the curriculum and an extensive range of hardware and software enables access to curriculum for all students. All classrooms feature Interactive Whiteboards (IWB) and include extensive use of iPads to support student communication. Switch devices allow students to actively respond to and demonstrate choice.
Excursion programs involving day and overnight trips provide students with a wide range of learning experiences outside the school environment and offer enrichment to the school curriculum. Students are provided with many opportunities to develop knowledge, independence and social skills in different environments.
A fully equipped kitchen enables students to develop skills in preparing meals, snacks and drinks.
We have a well-equipped library and a teacher employed for one day a week to implement library programs. With written permission from parents students are given the option to take their chosen library books home. Students are allocated special library bags which the library books are to be kept in. Library books that are taken home are the responsibility of the student and family.
A weekly non-denominational program is offered to senior students.
